Your Inner Cat

I'm sitting in a sunny room, watching my two young cats, Hope and Robert, preen themselves and I'm struck by an idea. Cats are themselves 100% of the time in 100% of situations. They can't be trained (much) and they definitely don't come when they are called unless there's something in it for them. If anything, cats train us to meet their needs and desires. They are masters of just being themselves. Unfortunately, many people have difficulty being who the are to even a fraction of the degree that cats can do. In my opinion, we have a lot to learn from our feline friends, and we would be much happier if we learned it.


Cats sleep when they are sleepy. Most of us don't do that. We stay up later than is healthy, trying to get "one more thing" done, which often leads to ten more things and we end up sleep deprived and feeling cranky. If we unplug and get a good night's rest we will feel better and be more productive. By knowing and being yourself, you will feel more rested and healthier.


Cats play for a good amount of the time they are awake. People seldom get enough fun, enough Joy, in their daily life, then they are surprised that they no longer know how to have fun. When we do things we enjoy, we are playing. When we are playing, we are usually exercising our bodies and minds without forcing it. Remember what is play for you and see your happiness increase.


Cats eat when they are hungry. They know their bodies' signs and go to where the food is, then they stop eating and walk away when they have had enough. Cats know who they are and what they need and they generally take good care of themselves. If we want to take care of ourselves, we must do what cats do and and know ourselves. We can then meet our needs and be healthier and happier.


Humans are not cats, of course, so we sometimes need help in knowing ourselves and how to make sure that our more complex lives fit us.
